On November 4th, 2025, Virginia held three major statewide elections, one of which would determine the next governor of the commonwealth. Within an hour of the polls closing at 7 p.m., Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earl-Sears to become the 75th governor of Virginia.

Almost all the counties in Virginia shifted towards the Democrats, a stark contrast to the statewide Republican shift in the 2024 Presidential Election a year ago. Almost a year into the Trump presidency, the shift reflects concerns that voters may have with the current administration’s handling of economic and social issues.

This wasn’t the only victory for the Democrats that night. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi defeated Republican John Reid in the Lieutenant Governor’s race, and Democrat Jay Jones defeated Incumbent Republican Jason Miyares in the highly contested Attorney General’s race. Paired with significant victories in other states, these wins provided Democrats with much-needed momentum heading into the midterms next year.

Some say that the government shutdown and its impact on federal workers in the region may have been the cause for the new Democratic support. Northern Virginia has a high concentration of Virginia’s federal workers, and the entire region voted overwhelmingly Democratic. Worker furloughs, department cuts, and mass firings gave all of these federal employees a chance to voice their frustrations with the shutdown.
“People being at home worrying about if they’re going to have a job when they come back, how to pay their rent, how to get food, it’s just a huge concern,” Loudoun County resident Cheryl Swinson said in an interview with CNN at a polling booth outside of Arcola Elementary School. “The shutdown impacts not just Virginia, but the whole DMV area.”
The closest election that night, the Attorney General’s race between Democrat Jay Jones and Republican Jason Miyares, was a highly contested race due to the controversies surrounding Jay Jones and text messages showing Jones fantasizing about shooting then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Residents all throughout Virginia saw attack ads run by Miyares’ campaign regarding this issue for the weeks leading up to the election. Nevertheless, Jones still won the race by a 6.7% margin.

As both parties look towards the midterms in 2026, the Democrats seem to have increasingly more control over the state. Virginia Democrats gained more than 13 seats to increase their majority in the Virginia House of Delegates to 65 seats. This allows the party to further their agenda, which also includes possible redistricting plans that may help the Democrats win more seats in Congress.
