Social media is crucial in this generation to communicate, entertain, and interact with others. A variety of different platforms are emerging, it is important to notethe dangers that students can face to the extent of a negative mental state and a distration in schools. A seniors near the end of the school year, eventd such as senior sunrise, senior skipday, and senior assassin are carried out. One of these events is a fun game of superlatives called Senior Superlatives where students vote on seniors who match certain titles. Recently, the plethera of insagram pages dedicated to this event has peaked admin interest. They expressed in the Knightly Newsletter that these instagram pages are not affiliated with John Champe High School. These unofficial pages contain hurtful and inappropriate content that do not reflect the values of JCHS or Loudoun County Public Schools. In an effort to partner with students and parents to address this issue, our admin encourages parents to speak with your student(s) about the impact of these types of online platforms and the harm they can cause to individuals and our school community. School staff also plans to address the impacts of cyberbullying when we return from spring break. In addition, resources have been sent out regarding cyberbullying for parents and students to follow, which are linked below.
“I think Champe Senior Superlatives are meant to be fun and lighthearted game that the seniors do, it’s only when the seniors take it in the wrong way that it can start to be concerning,” junior Arden Shapiro said. “As long as the seniors don’t turn it into something negative, it should continue to go on for the upcoming senior classes and beyond.”
