In the 2025-2026 school year the curriculum is expanding at John Champe with new elective courses. Eight new classes are being offered, covering classes from CTE to World Languages and everything in between.
These new classes help students learn in fun and useful ways. With many choices, everyone can find something they enjoy and that helps them in the future.
“The broadcast class being offered next year will be focused on students working together to produce broadcast content for Champe and the community,” English Teacher and Yearbook Advisor Corrine Miller said.
Broadcast Journalism is an alternative way for students at Champe to communicate new information happening throughout the school with videos and audios compared to the writing that takes place in the Newspaper class. Broadcast Journalism will only be offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors, it will not require any prerequisites.
“The idea of having broadcast journalism at Champe is exciting to me,” Miller said. “It’s a whole new way that we can push out information to students.”
The first class is in the english department which is the Young Adult Literature elective that lets students read and discuss diverse books written for young adults. Instead of essays, the class includes fun projects and activities, like a year-long book club. It’s a great choice for book lovers and a good introduction to AP Literature for upperclassmen.
“It would be a good class for anyone who enjoys reading and discussing literature,” English teacher Jessica Spencer said. “The class is currently open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.”
There is a new language being added into the champe curriculum which is Arabic 1. The county is starting with just level 1 of Arabic and plans to add more levels in the future. A few schools, including JCHS, will pilot the course before expanding it further within the county.
“Adding Arabic into our offered classes will be the first language class that doesn’t use the English alphabet,” World Languages Department Chair Kristin Wells said. “It will be a good opportunity for students to expand their knowledge on languages.”
Finally, in the theatre department the new elective Theatre Stagecraft, Production & Design is being added. It is a Dual Enrollment class which will earn students a college credit. It will be focused on lighting, props, set design, sound and more behind the scenes jobs of backstage jobs at an advanced level. Students are expected to have technical theatre experience before joining the class.
“Students should expect to be working actively to support the after school theatre program and the musical theatre show,” Theatre Educator Nichole Shepherd said. “And to take on leadership roles and responsibility with a higher level of commitment.”
With all the new classes taking place at Champe, it is giving the students many more opportunities to find a class that they can help grow into an amazing program.
“Because it’s a brand new class, we really have the opportunity to grow the program from the ground up,” Miller said.
