On Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, students gathered in room 1811, also known as the Black Box, to listen to a meeting about participating in The Little Mermaid. Assistant Technical Director and Choreographer Sarah Anderson presented a slideshow about expectations, code of conduct, and mandatory and optional things to complete in order to become part of the crew. After this, different tech leads stood up and presented what their department does. These departments include Set, Sound, Lights, Costumes, Hair and Makeup, Stage, Marketing and Management. These tech heads explained what their department does and how it contributes to the musical. The Set Crew builds each set for the show and is responsible for moving set pieces between scenes. The Sound Crew is in charge of microphones and background music during intermission. The Light Crew handles stage lights as well as spotlights to make the stage illuminated during scenes. The Costume Crew is in charge of giving each character and background characters their own costumes to use during the show and make the costumes themselves sometimes. Hair and Makeup is in charge of changing an actor’s hair or makeup in between appearances and Stage is around to make sure all of these aspects go smoothly during the show and solving any problems and they come up. Additional crews are Marketing, who advertises the show, and Management, that manages all of these as well as attendance. The Little Mermaid is opening on May 1, 2025.
“The tech meeting was good, it went over stuff that people who are already in Avalon know but it’s still good to know,” sophomore Tanya Palaparthi said. “It was pretty quick and concise. All the teachers gave introductions and explained the code of conduct and what we were going to do and then the tech heads explained what they do.”
