A ceasefire agreement has taken place between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of conflict. The ceasefire is set to be established as early as Sunday, January 19, 2025. The United States, Egypt, and Qatar have supported the truce. If the ceasefire were to take place, it would halt the war happening in Gaza and allow for the release of Israeli hostages taken during the October 2023 conflict. Palestinian detainees who are held by Israel will also be released. There is also humanitarian relief with over 500 aid trucks set to entire Gaza daily. These will help address displacement, food shortages, and destroyed infrastructure. World leaders hope this agreement will further pave the way towards permanent peace.
The ceasefire is a necessary development,” senior Sidharth Nemani said. “No matter whether you support Israel or Palestine, a ceasefire, which keeps the peace, is a positive for everyone involved.”
The ceasefire deal is pending final approval from Israel’s Cabinet.
