There is an egg shortage in America due to the avian influenza virus, also known as the “bird flu” that is highly contagious between birds. In 2024 during the months of November and December, 17.2 million egg-laying hens died due to the virus that has killed more than 100 million birds since the outbreak in 2022. In the past, the bird flu has been able to spread through dairy farms too, which affects dairy cows causing them to have a risk of being infected by the virus.
“The contagious flu is impacting the production of large amounts of eggs, leading to a large decline due to the harsh flu impact,” Kareena Ohri said. “This rapid spread is making me feel worried for the reduction in the supply of eggs.”
