The John Champe Student Council Association (SCA) will be holding the first-ever winter formal or winter dance. The winter formal dance will be similar to the homecoming dance, but instead of being in the fall, it’s held in the winter.
The dance is set to be held on February 8th, 2025, in the Champe gymnasium. SCA is planning on creating a theme and including an event that will lead up to the dance.
“SCA came up with this idea when we were planning our annual two-part winter spirit week,” SCA President Nsayah Davis said. “We will have one spirit week before winter break and one leading up to the winter formal in February.”
Throughout the school year, SCA hosts three spirit weeks: one in the fall before homecoming, one before winter break, and one in the spring. This year SCA will be having four spirit weeks, since we will be adding one before the winter formal is being held.
“The SCA members have been amazing in coming up with ideas for the dance,” SCA Co-sponsor Natalie Hudson said. “Seeing them following through with their ideas and to see them come to life is awesome.”
Being a part of SCA requires a creative and wild mind, not being afraid to think outside the box, and being willing to put in extra time and effort for school events, to make them special for all the students and staff members.
“We decided that we wanted to do a winter formal because we wanted to give the classes something to look forward to following our winter spirit week that we do,” SCA Vice President Luke Zachariasiewicz said. “Just like how we do homecoming as the final event of the fall spirit week, we felt it was important to provide a similar event following the winter spirit week as well.”
The spirit week will look similar to the fall spirit week leading up to homecoming, with fun dress-up days, treats during lunches, and, of course, the Friday pep rally. Spirit weeks normally lead up to a special event that is about to happen at school, so with SCA adding another school dance it has brought a lot of excitement for students and staff members especially since this will be the first-ever winter formal.
“As of now, we’ve been planning the dance for about two weeks or so,” Zachariasiewicz said. “As a class, we all are still figuring out what we want the theme of the dance to be and all the components we want to incorporate or include.”
Planning the dance will take SCA some time, but the student body seemed to be excited and

can’t wait for the announcement of the theme, since students will need to purchase a dress or suit for this event.
“I have loved being a part of this organization and to be helped with the first winter formal is amazing and I hope to continue my role for many more years to come,” Hudson said. “Even in the coming years this is something that we hope to do annually, we want to offer this event every year to our Champe staff and students to help bring the whole school together.”
