John Champe High School has adopted a new attendance initiative program to encourage students to finish their work, arrive on time, and maintain academic integrity. Assistant Principal Solomon Wright is optimistic that this initiative will be successful. “Most of the time, we focus on the 5% of students doing the wrong thing,” Wright said. “We have students that come here every single day that go to class, turn in their assignments, and do what they are supposed to” Wright mentioned, “and it hard to recognize that, because we’re always focused on the negative” Wright added, “so we want to try and flip that around and focus on the positive,” Wright said.
The incentive is as follows: Students who miss five days or less and if they have one referral or less as well as no missing assignments will be invited to attend an award day on the 17th of January, which is the last day of the quarter. This will also give students who did not finish their work the opportunity to catch up on missing assignments. If successful, Mr. Wright hopes to implement this for every quarter moving forward.
