On the evening of Friday, Dec. 13th, 2024, high school seniors all across Virginia logged on to the admissions portal for the University of Virginia (UVA) to see if they had been accepted, denied, or deferred. Even though these decisions were only for the Early-Action and Early-Decision applicants, tensions were high throughout the day as many had applied to the school early. Expectations among everyone varied, especially since the admissions rate for the school is shockingly low, at around 15-20%. As one of Virginia’s most prestigious schools, this moment was big for many, especially as some had been working on getting in since a young age.
“We wish that we had more places in the first-year class and that our decisions were not so hard to make and especially so hard to bear,” UVA Associate Vice Provost of Enrollment and Admission Greg W. Roberts said in the rejection letters sent out to applicants. “Still, we regret that we must disappoint many students who we know will be successful in college and far beyond.”
As seniors from Champe anticipatingly clicked on their decision letters, they were informed of their application’s status in a short message. Many were rejected, which prompted feelings of disappointment at the moment. Some were deferred, meaning that their application would be revisited by the admissions team and would be announced with the regular decision applications. As expected, only a small number of students were accepted. Nonetheless, many are glad that the process is over and that they can focus on the next part of their college journey, whether that is in Charlottesville or somewhere else.
