The John Champe swim team has experienced many changes over the last few months. Previous coaches, Coach Johnson and Coach Marr, have both resigned towards the beginning of this year due to personal reasons. This allowed previous team members to step up and organize all pre-season events such as the interest meeting and tryouts. Fortunately, the hunt for new trainers was short lived as Marc Wergley and Marianne Cornell stepped up to preserve the team, and became the new coaches.
Around 80 students tried out for the varsity team this year, including 30 freshmen. Unfortunately, many will have to be cut because the team can only support a total of 50 swimmers, 25 girls and 25 boys. Swim tryouts lasted for two days, and consisted of swimming freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and the IM. “Tryout results are coming out on Monday,” junior Parnika Palavalli said. “I’m really hoping to make the team this year, because I’ve been on it since freshman year.”
