Students at Champe have found many ways to express their creativity, one of the ways being running a business. Sophomore Sydney Robinson created a clothing line, “SER”.
Robinson created her clothing line last year because she loves everything about clothes. She took her creativity and passion for clothing and turned it into a business. Robinson worked very hard to get her clothing line started and she found a lot of motivation with the support of her parents and friends along the journey of her brand.
“I always had a love for clothing and one day I was just thinking about how it would be cool to have my own clothing line so, I made designs and talked it over with my parents and next thing you know I’m selling clothes,” Robinson said. “I’ll say my parents have been my biggest supporters throughout all of this.”
The SER business is run from her house and all her supplies and products are stored there. Robinson has a website that is where people can order and browse all her products. As well as using social media to promote her products and make sure her brand is known to others.
“I struggled at first to get my projects out there,” Robinson said. “I feel like the best way that I found to promote my business is social media and when I get the chance I like to talk to people about it.”
Robinson overcame challenges and it may have taken longer than she would have liked but found the best ways for her to run her clothing line. Robinson struggled with promoting and pricing all her products at first, because she wanted everything to be fair and affordable for other students her age who might not be working but can still afford the clothing. Another challenge Robinson faced was to make sure she stayed motivated when people would not be encouraging towards her clothing line.
“One challenge I faced and is still facing is how people get jealous and the people who I thought would support me didn’t,” Robinson said. “One more challenge is making it affordable for everyone and dealing with people my age saying it’s expensive but they would spend the same amount on other clothes.”
Owning a clothing brand takes a lot of hard work, time, and dedication especially as a high school student. A lot goes into starting a business like choosing designs and finding a location to run your business out of. Making the business successful can also be a big factor in how long you have the business running and how you have it grow and expand.
“I plan on keeping my brand for as long as I can,” Robinson said. “I want to expand it to different categories of products other than clothes.”
Starting a clothing business as a high school student is no easy task but Sydney Robinson took on the challenge and is enjoying being able to express her creativity and love for clothing at one time.
“If you’re thinking about starting a clothing brand, you only live once so you might as well just do it and don’t let anyone tear you down,” Robinson said.
