At Champe, there are many student-run businesses. These businesses vary from clothing brands to cosmetology businesses. The most promising student running a cosmetic business would be senior Tatyana Wilson.
“I do washes and blowouts, curls, dreads, locs, twists,” business owner Tatyana Wilson said. “basically anything that you can think of doing with hair is what I do.”
Wilson has always had a passion for hair, as she was interested in different techniques and styles. Additionally, Wilson was influenced by others in her family as she grew up around them doing others hair. This very heavily peaked her interest with styling and working with hair. Though, her passion for working with hair also stemmed from seeing other people happy and content with their hair.
“Seeing my clients’ reactions to their hair is my favorite part of being a stylist,” Wilson said. “Seeing their happy expressions makes me want to work harder.”
With over four years of experience and licenses in cosmetology that include hair and facials, Wilson has a very steady income business. Even so, this isn’t enough, her end goal is to make this home-ran business turn into a full functioning salon with happy clients coming in and out. To reach this goal, Wilson plans on going back to cosmetology school after graduating high school to get more cosmetology licenses so that she can expand her business to not just hair, but to nails, and other cosmetic procedures.
“Eventually I do see myself opening my own salon,” Wilson said. “Hopefully my dream comes true sooner than later.”
Wilson has always envisioned herself as being a stylist and accomplishing this dream, she plans on continuing to work hard and to satisfy her customers. The most difficult problem Wilson faces when it comes to her business is promoting her brand to potential customers. This is because many people don’t have the resources to find a reliable stylist, or have trouble finding a reliable stylist in their area. Wilson tries to take advantage of every opportunity she has to publish and promote her business.
“Promoting my work is a huge part of my business,” Wilson said. “It definitely isn’t always easy trying to bring in new customers in.”
Her promotion is usually through social media; ie Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, et. Most times this promotion just isn’t enough because many people don’t believe that Wilson is a reliable source. As a last resort, Wilson relies on her customers to help spread her business to other potential clients so that she is able to continue pursuing her dream.
“I’ve always seen myself becoming big in the cosmetic industry,” Wilson said. “That is why I do so much in my business, to make my dream turn into reality.”
