Alex Morgan was a professional soccer player who played her last game on September 8, 2024 for San Diego wave. During her time as a soccer player she was named U.S. Soccer’s Female Athlete of the Year (2012, 2018), Morgan is also a four-time Concacaf Player of the Year (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018), a five-time FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 selection (2016 ,2017, 2019, 2021, 2022) and a three-time finalist for FIFA World Player of the Year (2012, 2019, 2022). When fans found out Morgan was dropped from the olympic roster, they started to speculate that her retirement was approaching. During her last game she lead her team to a 4-1 victory against North Carolina Courage. She was subbed out at the 13th minute after missing a penalty shot during the 10th minute. Many say that goalkeeper Casey Murphy should’ve let Morgan score for her last game, since then a lot of controversy has risen.
“I don’t think Casey Murphy should have let the ball go in,” varsity goalkeeper Carlita Wilson said. “It was a tricky situation for sure, but being in the goalies shoes I would not want to give someone anything they didn’t earn. If Alex Morgan took a good shot, then she earned her last goal.”
