On May 30th, 2024, Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges are related to a hush money scheme that he committed to influence the votes of the 2016 presidential election. This conviction challenges his capability as a presidential candidate, which is especially important to note due to the upcoming election in November of this year. However, he can still run for president, as there is no change to his status as a candidate legally, as the Constitution does not say anything against him running as a criminal. Trump’s sentencing is on June 11th at 10 AM EST, which is when we will learn what punishment Trump is facing. He has stated that he will appeal, which would push the case to another court and delay his punishment after he receives his sentencing.
“I think he’s definitely guilty of this,” sophomore Tarun Alex said, “and the appeal won’t actually do much. He will appeal to delay his punishment, but I think he will still be sentenced.”
