Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the president of Mexico, holding a place in the history of Mexico as the first female president. Both candidates in the election were women this year, which had never been an option before. The voting results took place on Sunday, June 1, 2024. Not only did she beat the norms of presidential positions held by males, but she also has become the first president of Mexico with a Jewish background, while Mexico is a dominantly Catholic country.
“As I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone,” Claudia Sheinbaum said to Yahoo News. “We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters.”
This election marks another stream of global progress for gender roles, as there is still a heavy presence of male-dominated beliefs in countless countries across the world. Her victory has the power to inspire women and girls all over the world, by showing once again that it’s possible to defy the norms, and that she can be just as great a president as any other.
