Former LSU Quarterback and 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner Jayden Daniels was drafted to the Washington Commanders on April 25th, 2024. Almost a month later, the Commanders have put in significant work with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Once Daniels had arrived at the Commanders facility in Ashburn, all eyes were on him as fans across the DMV hoped that this would mark the start of a new era in Washington Football, especially since the sale of the team to Josh Harris in 2023. The Commanders have completely revamped their ownership and coaching staff, as the new General Manager Adam Peters hired former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Dan Quinn to fill the vacant head coaching position in Ashburn.
Since 2017, the team has started 12 different quarterbacks, but the organization has only made the playoffs once in 2020. There is a lot of excitement about Daniels, and he has openly said that he wants to learn and develop into a reliable quarterback for the Commanders. A few weeks after Daniels’ arrival, the Commanders announced that Veteran Punter Tress Way would be giving his jersey number (#5) to Daniels, who wore the number during his time at LSU. Daniels sported this jersey number at his first minicamp on May 10th, 2024. Daniels has only improved since then, as multiple clips of him adjusting to the Commanders playbook and personnel have surfaced on social media.
At a Fellowship of Christian Athletes 7v7 football event held at John Champe High School, Way, who was present as a guest speaker, expressed his liking for Daniels. Additionally, he said that the Commanders will be engaged in their Training Camps coming this summer as well.
