National Earth day was first appointed and celebrated in the 1970’s, and now on April 22nd people all over the world come together to educate and acknowledge planet earth. This Monday billions of people organized clean ups to pick up trash and create posters to spread awareness of pollution. National Earth day is also advertised on popular social media sites like instagram and TikTok. This encourages younger generations to participate and educates them on the importance of keeping the earth clean. Additionally this day is celebrated in school by different classes or clubs.
John Champs National Science Association organizes yearly clean ups for students in the club. They pick up trash throughout the school’s parking lot and the fields around it. Teachers who teach environmental sciences also create clean ups and other awareness activities that all John Champe students can participate in. For example, in previous years, environmental teacher Christiana Marr would organize clean ups and encourage her students to attend. “This year I participated in a clean up at John Champe,” sophomore Sandy Ryad said. “We cleaned up trash around the school and it was fun.”
