Freedom High School is notoriously known for having a stellar baseball team; they were ranked the number one team in the state in 2023. Although their rank dropped to 61 in the state this season, they were still much higher than Champe’s 104th rank. On Thursday, April 11th, Champe hosted Freedom for their annual rivalry game. The game was close for all 7 innings, with the score being 2-2 at the top of the seventh inning. Freedom was at bat for the top of the inning and didn’t bring in any runs. The pressure and outcome of the game was entirely on Champe, having the last at bat of the tied game. Bryce Munchel was up to bat, with Trevor Casad on second. Munchel hit a line drive to the center fielder, bringing Casad home to win the game. After the last couple of years and the success of Champe’s program, Champe was able to defeat their biggest rival, 3-2.
“The energy was so high during the game and after,” Sophomore, Bryce Munchel, said. “I was in shock after I got that hit because it didn’t feel real.”
