The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released new safety limits for some of these chemicals in drinking water on April 10, 2024. Recently, it was found that many Americans were drinking water with harmful chemicals such as PFAS or “forever chemicals”. The chemicals are extremely dangerous because they can have chemicals that are linked to health issues like cancer and immune system damage. The EPA discovered PFAS in the water supply of over 44 million people after testing many water systems. In order to combat this, the new regulations are meant to enforce maximum containment on these “forever chemicals” so people can have safer and cleaner drinking water throughout America.
“It is relieving to hear that they are providing cleaner waters for us and caring about our health,” sophomore Jaswant Eirpineni said. “Thinking about drinking dirty water makes me want to change the system but luckily they changed it.”
With these regulations, Americans will begin to have access to safer water as soon as possible.
