A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, evidently blocking the view of the sun to different extents around the world. On Monday, April 8, 2024, we will be experiencing a solar eclipse, and it’ll be the first one we’ve had since August of 2017. Some schools around the nation have cancelled school altogether, but here in Loudoun County, schools will remain open but the county will be providing specific glasses to students to look at the eclipse. These glasses are called safe solar viewers, and they have special filters to protect your eyes from the eclipse, as it can be very hurtful to your eyesight to look at the eclipse without proper protection.
“I’m excited to see how much of the eclipse will be covering the sun from here,” Loudoun County student Kyra Gordon said. “Our teachers said they’ll probably take us outside to see the eclipse during the day.”
“Hopefully we will be able to see most of the sun covered but I’m not sure how much we will be able to see because of our location,” Gordon said. “I don’t remember the last solar eclipse so it should be a cool experience.”
