Recently, Champe students were pulled from their study halls and taken to the auditorium. Assistant Principal Solomon Wright gave a presentation which lasted around 45 minutes. Wright touched on topics previously stated during the presentation given during the beginning of the current school year. Among the topics Wright spoke on were, sexual harassment, racism, and drug usage. Racism was a very relevant topic considering the incident that had happened a week prior. Two Champe students got into an altercation after one student supposedly used a racial slur leading to them getting slapped. Wright also said that it is intolerable to say any slurs or use offensive language in school.
Sophomore Ishaan Singh was present for the assembly and had some thoughts. “They definitely touched on some serious topics about racism and vapes and stuff,” Singh said. “Mr. Wright talked about skipping but I haven’t seen a lot of people skipping but it still sounds like an issue considering it’s mentioned basically everyday in the announcements.”
Mr Wright also spoke on sexual harassment, mainly explaining what a Title 9 violation was and also saying students shouldn’t put out explicit photos on social media as they could be at risk of getting caught and receiving punishment. Overall, Mr. Wright and other faculty as well as students hope that the presentation will reinforce the principles that John Champe stands on.
