The John Champe Student Council Association (SCA) organized many fun events through the winter season. Along with these events, they also have a lot of planning for future events.
One of the biggest events SCA hosted this season was the Winter Showcase. The Winter Showcase is similar to “Family Feud”, consisting of trivia questions that SCA would ask the participants. Each grade participated in this event by having representative members from each grade. For every correctly answered trivia question, representative members earned a specific number of points, contributing to their grade’s overall score. The Junior class for this year came out on top with the most points during this year’s Winter Showcase.
“Student council is something that is built off of your peers and who individually picked you to represent our class for the Winter Showcase,” junior president Darby Hamillton said. “Another part of it is building connections with the rest of the council. Since this was about halfway through the year and almost our senior year we really have got to know each other.. I love being able to do these activities and being able to win it for our class was so special and I love being a part of it.”

In addition to the Winter Showcase, SCA continued their tradition of community outreach by organizing the Toy Drive for the second consecutive year. Partnering with the organization Mobile Hope for a second year, SCA planned to have students donate toys and other items to kids in need for the holiday season.
“The Toy Drive went really well. It was a good way for people to donate to a good cause,” SCA member Mikayla Belev said. “Hopefully we can do this again next year.”

Along with the many events hosted by SCA this season, they are also planning many more events to come within the winter season. They are planning to have another spirit week and this time it will lead into a pep rally. The pep rally will consist of multiple games, performances, and grade-class competitions. SCA will also announce the winners of the spirit week, ultimately deciding the leading class-grade winners for the season.
“I’m super excited for this upcoming pep rally and spirit week,” Belev said. “It’s supposed to be a more fun one since it’s all about the class vs. class games, and the most fun and engaging moments always come from that.”
They are also hosting the Powderbuff game on February 14, 2024. The Powderbuff game will be a volleyball game with juniors, seniors, coaches, and players. Champe students are also able to purchase jerseys for $25 dollars. All the money that is raised from the Powderbuff game will go towards the American Heart Association.
“I think that becoming an upperclassman is so fun and so special, definitely the most memorable part of being in high school,” Hamilton said. “Once you reach that next level so many different opportunities are opened up to each student, specifically the powderbuff game. You’re able to go against some of your best friends in a fun battle for the better class. I definitely think this is one of the most fun events we have and definitely something to remember.”

For this season, SCA made many engaging events to keep students tied with the school spirit. SCA engaged students in spirit week, hosted a winter showcase as a way for a fun trivia game, and had a toy drive to help kids for the holiday season. With the many events that were planned and hosted by the SCA, they plan to add more events including fundraisers, spirit weeks, and sports activities for the winter season
“SCA has some really good events coming up that I’m super excited to go through with,” Belev said. “Most exciting of those would probably be our first ever school powderbuff game. This year, I get to actually coach the junior team myself this time.”
