Recently, the LCPS Opioid Awareness Task Force has put out an advisory on the opioid Percocet, weeks after an advisory on Fentanyl was put out. The task force states that Percocet, a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen, is being smoked and can be harmful to youths in our community who may be abusing the substance. When purchased illegally, these drugs can also contain amounts of fentanyl, increasing a possibility of an overdose due to the speed of which these drugs can enter the bloodstream.
“We really should evaluate how we approach these topics,” said one John Champe parent. “Informing kids about how these drugs can harm them is always a good way to prevent them from using.”
In response to this crisis, LCPS has been hosting more Fentanyl prevention and information awareness sessions at multiple LCPS high schools. The county has also been putting up informational posters in areas where illicit drugs may be in use, such as school bathrooms. Parents are advised to have conversations with their students about these harmful substances and how they can not fall victim to them.
