The Northern Area of Virginia is expected to get a lot more snow on average during the 2023-2024 winter season. The yearly average snowfall amount for Northern Virginia is 15 inches. In the 2023-2024 winter season, Northern Virginia is expected to get a total of 17-22 inches of snow. This is because of an El Niño year. An El Niño year is a natural climatic occurrence in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean close to the equator, characterized by sea surface temperatures that are warmer than usual. An El Nino year occurs every 4 years, which is why Northern Virginia is getting above average snowfall.
“It feels good that we have snow since we have limited amount of breaks this year,” junior Srihaas Vemulapally said. “Also it’s been a while since I’ve seen snow, so I can’t wait.”
If the snowfall predictions are accurate, Loudoun County will have a lot more closures during this winter season.
