Girls Basketball Starting Fresh
John Champe Girls Basketball program recently got a new coaching staff to coach this upcoming season. Coach Hatchett, Coach Ryan, and Coach Sellars are all the new coaches for the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. So far they have created a selected preseason team to join and play tournaments with. They just recently participated in a Fall league tournament at Garfield High School in Woodbridge, and this tournament continues through October.
The team looks forward to a new fresh start in the program and is ready to really make a difference in the school’s record. “I think that we can be better than last year,” says Junior Sierra Price. Sierra has been a part of the Champe Girls Basketball program since her freshman year and was co-captain last year on the JV team. Natalie Kim, who has also been playing since freshman year and was a part of the varsity team last year, gave her opinion on the upcoming season too. “I think the team chemistry and bond is stronger which hopefully will lead us to a more successful season now that we are all on the same page.” Looking at the players opinions on the season it looks like there will be a lot more progression this season than in past years.
When it comes to the team during preseason, they meet 3-5 days a week for usually 3 hours. By doing so, they can build the relationships needed as well as work on skills prior to November, this will definitely benefit their overall team chemistry and help them a lot this season. As seen on the photo to the right, the team is showing their close knit bond by celebrating freshman, Delaney Neal’s birthday post practice. Coach Ryan says, “Throughout the preseason, we have seen incredible improvement in our team atmosphere and team skillset. All of our players are dedicated to helping each other succeed in practice, and to building the program as a whole. They’ve created a family-like bond to one another and the season has not even started. It’s refreshing to see our hard work paying off, while also fostering a positive environment at all of our workouts.” With all of this hard work, the girls basketball program is definitely going to give Champe a great season this year!
