Omicron Variant Alarms World Health Organization
A new variant of the coronavirus, known as Omicron, was discovered in South Africa last week.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization announced that there have been at least twenty-three countries that have reported the virus. Cases of the new variant are project to grow in the coming weeks. While the omicron variant was initially reported in South Africa, it is said that the first known sample was discovered on November 9.
According to an article by CNBC News, the CDC announced that the first omicron case was detected in California by a person who was fully vaccinated. This news has alarmed health officials and members of the WHO, seeing as the vaccine continues to be tested to see if it is effective against omicron.
